Members of the Executive continue to engage and coordinate activities for members.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Dr Ayongo Mate-Kole and Dr Oum-Kalsoum Zakaria Adam of the Greater Accra branch visited the Adabraka Ascension Presbyterian Church on October 13, 2024. They addressed nearly 200 attendees about breast cancer and promoted awareness on Channel One TV the same day.
On October 19, 2024, MWAG collaborated with Dr. Ezanetor Rawlings, the Klottey-Korle MP, to host a screening event in Adabraka, where 70 to 80 individuals aged 16 to 82 were screened. Only one male was screened, and education on breast cancer risk was provided to teenage girls. The most common concerns included cyclical mastalgia, two breast lumps, two cases of nipple discharge, and one inflammatory rash, all referred for further investigation.
Additionally, on the same day the Northern Regional Branch, led by Dr Hawa Malechi educated women with disabilities on breast cancer and conducted clinical examinations at the Disability Centre in Tamale, screened 50 women after conducting blood pressure checks, and provided counselling services. The screenings revealed one suspicious lesion, prompting a referral to the breast clinic for further evaluation. Blood pressure checks indicated that eight individuals were unaware of their high blood pressure, along with several known hypertensives who had defaulted on their treatment.
Oral Health Education
Dr. Oum-Kalsoum Zakaria Adam, National Coordinator of yMWIA of MWAG and Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, continued her advocacy for health with an appearance on Joy Prime TV on October 23, 2024, where she spoke about Ludwig’s angina: the complications of untreated toothache.
