Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The Greater Accra Regional branch led by Dr Ayongo Mate-Kole, a Family Physician, collaborated with the Society of Family Physicians of Ghana (SOFPOG) to develop a self-breast examination guide widely shared on various platforms. Members of the Branch attended a breast cancer seminar organised by the SOFPOG on the 19th of October 2023 at Accra City Hotel with the theme: “The journey through Breast Cancer: the current trends in management”. MWAG reported on the group’s advocacy for breast cancer awareness and education nationwide.
On the 28th. of Oct 2023, MWAG collaborated with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Medical Students Association on a breast screening event at Kumasi Wesley Girls’ School where 1100 students were screened. 21 medical students, 2 medical doctors and 9 auxiliary medical personnel participated.
MWAG Recruitment Drive:
The active recruitment drive led by the National Coordinator of yMWIA of MWAG -Dr Oum-Kalsoum Zakaria Adam and her team is highly commendable.
On the 28th of October 2023, the University for Development Studies Medical Students Association had a Google Meet conversation with Dr Oum-Kalsoum Zakaria Adam under the auspices of the Vice President of the Students’ Association. The topic of discussion was “Empowering women in medicine.” MWAG was introduced to the students. There were twenty-one attendees.
On 19th Nov 2023, the Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Association hosted a virtual meeting with Dr OKZ Adam as Keynote Speaker on the theme ‘’Charting a bold future for female medical students’’. The event aimed to explore the challenges and opportunities facing female medical students and charting the course for their future in the medical field. Twenty-five students attended. An electronic database was set up to register all female medical students to enable the smooth running of a mentorship program.
National Women Physicians’ Day (NWPD) December 8th
Activities were held by all branches to commemorate the third National Women Physicians’ Day in Ghana in honour of Dr Susan Gyankroma Ofori-Atta, the first female Ghanaian physician. Members wore the MWAG cloth and shared pictures of the various activities they had undertaken. MWAG President Dr Mary Amoakoh-Coleman and Past Presidents Dr NaaAdorkor Sodzi-Tettey and Dr Mabel Aboah participated in a cookout “MWAG can Cook” which was aired on CITI TV on Tuesday the 5th of December.
16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence
MWAG members designed and shared daily posters with different messages on the various issues on several platforms including the NEAR platform, MWAG Facebook page and MWIA Facebook page.
