As part of the ongoing scientific activity program, our Alliance held a conference on sarcopenia at our institution’s headquarters. The session was masterfully delivered by Dr. Patricia Pacheco, a prominent nutritionist in our country. She addressed this condition as a growing health issue, particularly among older adults. Sarcopenia is characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, which affects mobility, increases the risk of falls, and deteriorates quality of life.
It was explained that sarcopenia is not just a result of aging, but is also influenced by physical inactivity, poor nutrition, chronic illnesses, and hormonal changes.
Regarding nutritional approaches, the talk emphasized the key role of a diet rich in high-quality proteins, appropriately distributed throughout the day. Other essential nutrients include vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and essential amino acids such as leucine, which promote muscle synthesis. In older adults, it may be necessary to incorporate nutritional supplements.
The talk concluded by stressing that the prevention and management of sarcopenia require a comprehensive approach that combines good nutrition, physical activity, and medical supervision. Educating the community about this condition allows for timely intervention, promoting active, healthy aging with greater functional independence.
