Cervical Cancer Awareness

Cervical cancer remains a significant global health challenge, disproportionately affecting women in many regions. This report highlights recent impactful initiatives spearheaded by various associations to bolster cervical cancer awareness, screening, and prevention, particularly during the month of January. Through strategic digital outreach, community engagement, and high-profile events, these efforts underscore a collective commitment to women’s health.

Digital Outreach and Awareness Campaigns

A broad coalition of countries actively promoted cervical cancer awareness through comprehensive digital messaging campaigns across various online platforms. These initiatives leveraged the power of social media and other digital channels to disseminate crucial information on symptoms, screening, and prevention methods to a wider audience.

Cameroon took to the airwaves, with Dr. Lillian Ngwana Banmi, the national Secretary General, appearing on a TV show. She provided invaluable educational insights into cervical cancer symptoms, available screening programs, and effective prevention strategies, reaching a broad national viewership.

Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Lesotho, Zambia, and Cameroon further amplified their messages by distributing informative posters on various community platforms, ensuring widespread visibility and access to critical health information.

Women in Medicine Lesotho hosted an impactful radio conversation dedicated to cervical cancer. This led to a significant challenge for their members: to screen a targeted number of women throughout the month of January, demonstrating a direct commitment to increasing screening rates.

The Medical Women’s Association of Zambia (MWAZ) and the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) proudly marked their presence at the National Women’s Day celebrations in Zambia. This significant occasion was officiated by the Zambian President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, who addressed the gathering. President Hichilema not only highlighted the Zambian government’s ongoing efforts to empower women through education, financial skills, and capacity building but also made a strong call to action to end sexual violence against women and girls.

International Women’s Month Activities

International Women’s Month saw robust participation from a number of associations across the region, making significant strides in public health advocacy.

Women’s Month also provided an opportunity to celebrate outstanding leaders within the MWIA, recognized by the World Medical Association JDN Gender Equity Taskforce. Honorees included the International President for MWIA, Dr. Amany Asfour; the President Elect, Dr. Mandakini Megh; MWAN President, Dr. Zainab; Kwaru Muhammad Idris; and the President of the Zimbabwe Women Doctors Association, Dr. Virginia. The Kenya Medical Women’s Association President, Dr. Christine Sadia, also participated in this convening.

The Zimbabwe Women Doctors Association Awards Gala
