National Representative: Dr. Fizzah Ali (United Kingdom)

Dr. Fizzah Ali took over from Dr Amanda Owen, as a national co-ordinator for MWIA and is looking forward to engage with MWIA on behalf of the Medical Women’s Federation.

The Medical Women’s Federation has recently seen change in presidency, with Professor Chloe Orkin taking over as President. She will serve as the Medical Women’s Federation President for the next two years. She is a Clinical Professor in HIV Medicine at Queen Mary University in London, and a Consultant at Barts Health, National Health Service (NHS) Trust.

There are several areas that the Medical Women’s Federation has been working on, with input from the recently elected Vice President, Dr Nuthana Bhayankaram. These areas include:

  • Webinars: e.g. on the menopause
  • Consultation work: the Government has taken on board input to fortify flour with folic acid
  • Parental leave campaign: members of the organisation, Dr Jasmine Thomas (Co-opted Council member) and Professor Neena Modi (Immediate Past President), continue to work on a parental leave campaign
  • Research – the formation of a research group was suggested to support student and junior members to conduct research on topics relevant to women doctors in training

At the time of writing this report, we have our virtual Autumn conference to look forward to.
