Dr. Cornelia Tauber-Bachmann
MWIA Regional Vice President for Central Europe
Dear Colleagues,
We have good and inspiring news from Germany, part of the MWIA Central Europe region.
Wajima Safi, aged 42, born in Kabul/Afghanistan, has qualified as professor in Internal Medicine, specialising in nephrology. She fulfilled her academic career at the Medical University of Brandenburg and held her inaugural lecture in May 2026. What makes her career remarkable is that she managed to come to this point step by step, with an enormous amount of energy and strategic perseverance, overcoming some obstacles and at some points slight resentments because she was a woman and having a migration background.
What is even more remarkable is that she also achieved a degree in Philosophy and German Literature!
As she told us she appreciated very much the network of the Deutsche Ärztinnenbund (German Medical Women’s Association). She has been an active member of the Young Forum.
Congratulations to Wajima and all the best for her future endeavours!

And further special news from Germany…
The German Medical Women’s Association devised a questionnaire about misuse of power that members have suffered during their professional careers. We are very curious about the results.
